Separating consulting projects from contract research projects can be complicated.
As a general rule, contract research projects usually focus on the further development
of the client's (commercially valuable) product, process or underlying concept
(such as running tests on a new drug compound or enhancing an engine for a motor
company) or the creation of a new commercially valuable product or process for
a client from specifications.
In cases such as these, the client usually provides the underlying IP, pays the
University a commercial fee for the work or further development, and owns the
results.
